England were struck a major blow on Wednesday after wicketkeeper Ben Foakes was ruled out of the upcoming Test series with New Zealand.

Foakes, who was set to play his first Test at home, tore his left hamstring after slipping in The Oval dressing room following Surrey’s draw with Middlesex last week.

Head coach Chris Silverwood has since called up Nottinghamshire opener Haseeb Hameed and Kent wicketkeeper-batsman Sam Billings. The former last played Test cricket in 2016 as a teenager, while the latter is uncapped at this level.

Foakes’ injury will force England to rejig their line-up for the first Test at Lord’s, beginning on June 2 – here are a few routes they could take with a 16-man squad at their disposal.

The most likely outcome

James Bracey, who previously looked to be an option in the top order, is now set to take the gloves, most likely slotting in at No.7. That should clear the way for a top order of Dom Sibley, an in-form Rory Burns and Zak Crawley, with a middle order of Joe Root, Dan Lawrence, Ollie Pope and Bracey to follow.

How would Hameed get in?

Hameed won’t join up with the England squad until Sunday, after Nottinghamshire’s County Championship encounter with Warwickshire, and is very much serving as cover for England’s other top-order options ahead of the first Test at Lord’s. Where he could slot in is if Dom Sibley – who has only just recovered from a broken finger – is given more time to regain fitness, but that seems unlikely after Sibley played for Warwickshire last week.

How would Billings get in?

Billings is very much a reserve option as a wicketkeeper and would only realistically feature if Bracey was to somehow be ruled out. He could still be a genuine middle-order option without the gloves as well, should someone else be made unavailable.
