Gujarat Giants faced an early blow in the 2023 WPL when captain, ace batter, and wicketkeeper Beth Mooney picked up an injury during the first match and was ruled out for the rest of the league. Led by Sneh Rana, they finished fifth out of five teams.
They won only two of their eight matches, against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals, both by 11 runs, to finish at par on points with Royal Challengers Bangalore. Despite that, Ash Gardner (202 runs, strike rate 142, 10 wickets, economy 9.21), Dayalan Hemalatha (151 runs at 157), and Kim Garth (11 wickets, economy 7.72) made impressive performances, as did Laura Wolvaardt (102 runs at 140) in her four-match stint.
GG in WPL 2024: Which players were released and acquired?
Ahead of the 2024 edition, Gujarat released twelve of their players, including big overseas stars like Annabel Sutherland, Sophia Dunkley, Georgia Wareham, and somewhat surprisingly, Garth, their best bowlers in 2023. However, they retained, among others, Mooney, Rana, Gardner, Hemalatha, and Wolvaardt.
From the auction, they got ten cricketers, including Phoebe Litchfield, Lauren Cheatle, Kathryn Bryce, Meghna Singh, Veda Krishnamurthy, and at INR 2 crore, their most expensive acquisition, Kashvee Gautam.
Mooney will lead the side. Ahead of the 2024 WPL, they replaced Rachael Haynes as head coach with Michael Klinger.
