“High time you hit your obsession for a six”
On the ninth anniversary of India’s 2011 World Cup win, Gautam Gambhir, one of the heroes of the final in Mumbai, took the opportunity to remind everyone that the win was a team effort and belonged to the entire country.
Replying to a social media post that was a throwback to the iconic six from captain MS Dhoni that clinched the World Cup for India, Gambhir took exception to the fact that Dhoni’s six was singled out as the defining moment of the final.
“Just a reminder: 2011 World Cup was won by entire India, entire Indian team and all support staff,” Gambhir wrote on Twitter. “High time you hit your obsession for a six.”

Gambhir played arguably the more crucial role in that final, and it was from his platform that Dhoni later took off. Chasing a tough target of 275 for victory, India were reduced to 31-2, and it was Gambhir who steadied the innings in the company of Virat Kohli.
Dhoni’s arrival later hastened India’s march to victory, and while the captain saw the team through, Gambhir perished on 97, with India still 52 away from the target.
Gambhir had also played an integral part in India’s 2007 World T20 triumph, making a match-winning 75 in a nailbiting final against Pakistan.
