Scotland were left frustrated as their World Cup League 2 clash against Oman was washed out due to rain when they needed just 25 more runs for victory with 37.4 overs left in Dundee on Tuesday (July 16).
Scotland robbed of a win against Oman
Having bowled out Oman for 123 in 38 overs, Scotland, riding high on an 83-run opening stand, were 99-2 before the clouds opened up. Eventually, Oman and Scotland split points after rain refused to relent, with the hosts needing just 25 more runs with eight wickets in hand.
Scotland debutant Jasper Davidson picked up 4-23 from his eight overs while Brandon McMullen and Mark Watt got two scalps each in the first innings. Zeeshan Maqsood was the top run-scorer for Oman with 40 runs but no other batter could cross 25.
In reply, the Scotland openers George Munsey (47 in 34) and Charlie Tear (39* in 32) stitched together 83 for the first wicket, taking their team towards the target with ease. Munsey and No.3 McMullen departed in the span of 11 balls before rain came pouring down.
Why did DLS not come into effect?
While it's not clear what the DLS par score was at the 12.2 over-mark, when the game stopped, it'd be safe to assume that Scotland would have been well ahead of the par score.
However, a minimum of 20 overs per side need to be bowled for an ODI to be constitute a result unless the team batting second chases the score down earlier. DLS par scores don't come into effect before the 20-over mark. Since neither of those conditions were met, the match was officially washed out.
Scotland’s head coach Doug Watson admitted the result was frustrating: “It’s frustrating, but I must commend the players who were outstanding in the cricket we did play.”
