Former Sri Lanka captain makes battling hundred to rescue first-class side after top-order collapse

Dinesh Chandimal of Sri Lanka bats during day three of the Second Test match in the series between Sri Lanka and Australia at Galle International Stadium on February 08, 2025 in Galle, Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka international Dinesh Chandimal made a hard-fought 132 for Galle in the National Super League 4-Day Tournament 2024/25.

Colombo won the toss at Dambulla and put Galle in to bat first. Chandimal walked out at No.3 inside the first over when Oshada Fernando fell for a duck.

Colombo kept chipping away but Chandimal stood firm, finally finding a willing partner in captain Ramesh Mendis, who came to the crease with the score reading 102-5. The two forged a 119-run partnership before Chandimal fell, edging behind off part-time leg-spinner Sanoj Darshika.

Chandimals’ 132 came off 195 balls and included 14 fours and a six. Galle, the only unbeaten side in the competition, finished the first day on 265-7.

Chandimal has captained Sri Lanka in 19 Tests, as full-time skipper from 2017 to 2019 before filling in for two games in early 2021. Established as one of his country’s most reliable modern batters, he has hit a rich recent vein of form, averaging 55.31 since the start of 2022 with five hundreds, including a career best 206* against Australia. This overturned a poor stretch before that, making no hundreds between 2019 and 2021 and averaging just 22 in that time.
