Afghan batter Ihsanullah Janat has been “banned from all forms of cricketing activities” for five years. He was found guilty of breach of Afghan Cricket Board (ACB) and ICC Anti-Corruption Codes during the Kabul Premier League (KPL), said an ACB release. The ban will be effective from the moment of the release of the statement (August 7) and will hold for five years.
What are the charges that led to Janat's ban?
Ihsanullah violated Article 2.1.1 of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code, which “involves improper influence or efforts to fix the result, prand ogress, conduct, or any other aspect of a match”. He admitted to the charges and “confessed to his involvement in corrupt activities”, though it is not clear exactly what these activities were.
The ACB Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) has revealed that three other players are also under suspicion for the same reasons. The investigations on them and investigations are currently underway, and subsequent decisions will be made once their involvement is proved.
Who is Ihsanullah Janat?
The brother of former Afghan captain Nawroz Mangal, 26-year-old Ihsanullah has played three Test matches (all in 2019), 16 ODIs (between 2017 and 2018), and a T20I in 2022. However, he has been active in the domestic circuit.
He had also represented Afghanistan at the 2014 and 2016 Under-19 World Cups, and made 63 when they famously beat Australia in the 2014 edition.
This is ot the first time and Afghan cricketer has been banned for match fixing. Earlier, in 2020, wicketkeeper Shafiquallah Shafaq was banned for six years " for attempting to fix matches in the 2019-20 Bangladesh Premier League and 2018 Afghanistan Premier League."
