James Vince, Joe Root and Ollie Pope have all been in franchise action this winter

The franchise league calendar is at its busiest points, with multiple tournaments all in action in the January window. English players make-up a huge part of the rosta currently jetting around the world as part of these competitions. There have been 78 English players who have featured in franchise leagues so far across the winter, here's how they've all got on.

Derbyshire

Zak Chappell

The Derbyshire bowler spent the lead-up to Christmas with the Rangpur Riders, in the Global Super League. After an impressive five-for on debut, Chappell failed to defend the Riders' total of 12, bowling in a super over against Hampshire. He went on to take a further two wickets as the Riders beat Victoria by 56 runs to win the GSL.

Durham

Graham Clark

Graham Clark has enjoyed a superb start to 2025, playing for Chittagong Kings in the Bangladesh Premier League. Top scores of 40, 60, and a whirlwind 101 off 50 balls, saw Clark accumulate 271 runs in 6 games, at an average of 45.2. Chittagong currently sit at 3rd in the BPL.

Ollie Robinson

Having been called up to the England Test side in New Zealand late last year, Durham wicketkeeper Ollie Robinson is currently playing for the Gulf Giants in the ILT20. He scored 0 and 5 in his only two games so far.

Essex

Adam Rossington

Rossington spent the lead-up to Christmas playing in the Global Super League for Lahore Qalandars, where he scored a total of 67 runs across five matches, and took two stumpings. He scored 9 in his first appearance for Dubai Capitals in the ILT20.

Paul Walter

Walter took part in six of the 10 games that Brisbane Heat played in this year’s Big Bash League, where they ended up in 7th place. He had a quiet campaign, where he took 4 wickets, and scored 67 runs at 16.75.

Michael Pepper

Pepper took part in the Abu Dhabi T10 league, where he scored 30 runs in 3 games for Team Abu Dhabi, where they finished 3rd. He has remained out in the UAE, and is currently playing for the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, where he most recently scored a fantastic 57 off 35 balls in a match-winning innings.

Jordan Cox

Cox is also out in the UAE, playing for the Gulf Giants in the ILT20. Having been sidelined with injury, preventing him from making his debut for England’s Test side, Cox made his return to professional cricket last week, notching 38 off 32 balls in his first innings back. He has since produced scores of 27, 1, and 10.

Sam Cook

Having been denied a chance to play for England this summer, Sam Cook took part in the Abu Dhabi T10 before Christmas, finishing 5th with Delhi Bulls. He had a quiet tournament, taking four wickets in six games. Currently, Cook is out in Australia playing for the England Lions, impressing against CA XI with four wickets in the first innings of a four-day game.

Matt Critchley

Critchley played four matches for the Pokhara Avengers in December’s Nepal Cricket League, taking just the one wicket, and scoring 52 runs at an average of 17.3.

Luc Benkenstein

The 20-year-old, South Africa-born allrounder took part in the Nepal Premier League last December, playing five games for Chitwan Rhinos, and finishing 3rd, having taken four wickets, and scored 85 runs.

Glamorgan

David Payne

The Vitality Blast player of the year has attracted a lot of attention from franchises over the world. Payne took part in the Abu Dhabi T10 before Christmas, playing seven games for the Bangla Tigers, and only taking three wickets. Like Pepper, Payne remained out in the UAE and is currently playing for the Desert Vipers. In his first match he took figures of 1/39, having been handed the new ball by skipper, Lockie Ferguson.

Jack Taylor

The middle order batter played all 10 matches for Morrisville Samp Army in the Abu Dhabi T10, finishing in second place, losing to Deccan Gladiators by eight wickets in the final. Despite a quiet campaign, Taylor starred in the opening fixture of the tournament, hitting an unbeaten 27 off 13 balls to etch out a narrow victory for his side.

Hampshire

Hampshire’s new overseas ownership has resulted in County sending a franchise side out to take part in the inaugural edition of the Global Super League, hosted in Guyana. The side, consisting of a number of Hampshire players, as well as some overseas signings, finished bottom of the table, winning only one match (in a super over), out of four.

James Fuller

Fuller took 4 wickets in the GSL, but impressed more with the bat, scoring 71 runs at an average of 35.5.

Tom Prest

Prest took part in the GSL, top scoring in one match with 30 off 22 balls. Other than that, the young gun had a quiet tournament.

Toby Albert

Albert kept wicket in the competition, batting at No.8. His highest score was a crushing 22 not out off just 9 deliveries against Guyana Warriors.

Joe Weatherley

The 6ft3 batsman took part in the GSL for Hampshire, scoring 51 runs in his 4 innings.

Benny Howell

Despite previously playing a great deal of franchise cricket, Howell’s only franchise engagement this year was in the GSL. In his four matches, he took five wickets and scored 40 runs.

Ali Orr

Orr had a disappointing GSL for Hampshire, scoring 31 runs across four innings.

Chris Wood

Captaining Hampshire in the inaugural GSL, Wood had a quiet tournament, scoring eight runs and taking just one wicket. In August, Wood took time away from Hampshire to take part in the Max60, hosted in the Caribbean. Playing for the Grand Cayman Jaguars, Wood could only take one wicket in three games.

Felix Organ

Organ only played one game in the GSL, finishing with figures of 0/21, and three runs.

Danny Briggs

Despite only taking two wickets in Hampshire’s campaign, Briggs impressed with an economy rate of 4.8 throughout the tournament.

Sonny Baker

The 21-year-old took four wickets in the competition, and didn't troubling the scorers with the bat. He is currently out in Australia with the England Lions, impressing with four wickets in the first innings of the 4-day game against CA XI, played in Brisbane.

Tom Alsop

Alsop did not play for Hampshire in the GSL, and had a rest month in December before heading out to Australia to play for Brisbane Heat in the Big Bash League. Despite only playing four games, Alsop impressed with the bat, scoring a quickfire 37 followed by an unbeaten 42 off just 26 balls against the Melbourne Renegades. He also kept tidily, taking three catches, and one stumping.

James Vince

The franchise king, James Vince, has been a big headline over the winter. Having given up his captaincy and red ball status to be granted an NOC to play in the Pakistan Super League, Vince has also moved out of England, to settle in Dubai, after multiple attacks on his family home over the summer. Vince had another extremely successful campaign with the Sydney Sixers, averaging over 45 in six games, and scoring a fantastic unbeaten 101 against the Melbourne Stars at the SCG. He left the BBL early to begin his captaincy for the Gulf Giants in the ILT20, starring in his second game with an unbeaten 76.

Liam Dawson

Dawson took six wickets for Hampshire in the GSL, but disappointed with the bat, with two scores of 0. He is now playing for Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20, where he took five wickets in his first four games.

Kent

Sam Billings

Billings had a quiet time for the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons in the Caribbean Cricket League, averaging 18.42 across right games, with one notable score of 56. Currently, Billings is playing for Sydney Thunder in the BBL. Across nine games, he has averaged 26.42, passing 50 once with an impressive 72. Thunder have also secured their place in the BBL playoffs.

Zak Crawley

The England opener struggled against Matt Henry over in New Zealand before Christmas, and is currently taking part in the SA20, representing Sunrisers Eastern Cape. His struggles have continued, with three single-digit scores in his first six games.

Lancashire

Luke Wells

Wells took part in the inaugural Global Super League, where he played all four matches for Lahore Qalandars. One notable innings saw him win a Player-of-the-Match award, with an unbeaten 35 off 24 balls against Hampshire.

Keaton Jennings

Jennings played three matches for Perth Scorchers in the BBL prior to Christmas, top scoring with 35. He has not featured since.

Liam Livingstone

In preparation for England’s T20 series against India, Livingstone played four fixtures in the SA20 for Pretoria Capitals, finishing with a respectable average of 24.5. He is now in India with the England white ball squad.

Richard Gleeson

Gleeson is impressing for Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20, having already taken eight wickets at an average of 14.25, with an economy of 6.7.

Phil Salt

Salt has based himself in the UAE since England’s white ball tour of West Indies. He played for Team Abu Dhabi throughout the Abu Dhabi T10, crashing an 18-ball half century in the opening game of the tournament. He has continued his form in the ILT20, opening the batting for Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, smashing 71 off 49 balls.

Luke Wood

Wood has played for both the Desert Vipers and the Deccan Gladiators over the winter. He has failed to take regular wickets but impressed with 3/8 against the New York Strikers in the Abu Dhabi T10.

Jos Buttler

The England captain spent the Abu Dhabi T10 campaign with Deccan Gladiators, scoring consecutive scores of unbeaten 60s to open his campaign, before underperforming for the rest of the tournament.

Leicestershire

Rehan Ahmed

Ahmed has only played two franchise matches this winter, both for Gulf Giants. Despite only the one wicket, he hit a quickfire 46 on debut, batting at No.3.

Middlesex

Leus du Plooy

Du Plooy took part in two games for Team Abu Dhabi, and is now with Joburg Super Kings. He has a top score of 38 at the top of the order.

Henry Brookes

Brookes played one game for the Bangla Tigers this winter and is currently playing for the Mid-West Rhinos Cricket side, as part of Zimbabwe’s domestic summer. He has gone wicketless thus far.

Stephen Eskinazi

Eskinazi is currently with the Dhaka Capitals in the BPL, having played for the Kathmandu Ghurkas prior to Christmas. It has been a decent winter so far for the top-order batter, highlighted by his top score of 60, for the Ghurkas.

Northamptonshire

David Willey

The veteran has taken five wickets in four games so far for the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders.

Saif Zaib

The all-rounder enjoyed a fantastic winter for the Sudur Paschim Royals in the Nepal Premier League. Top scores of 69 and a mesmerizing 90 was capped off by 12 wickets in nine games.

Nottinghamshire

Joe Clarke

Clarke has had a busy winter, representing Victoria in the Global Super League, Melbourne Stars in the BBL, Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the ILT20. His 121 runs in the GSL led Victoria to winning the inaugural edition of the competition.

Ben Duckett

Duckett was straight into action after his lackluster New Zealand series, as he flew straight to Melbourne, to represent the Melbourne Stars. Despite a duck of debut, Duckett had a fine stint with the stars, passing 60 on three occasions.

Alex Hales

Hales has represented three franchises this winter: Rangpur Riders, Desert Vipers, and Ajman Bolts. His highlight has to be the blistering 113 not out, off 55 balls, hitting back-to-back sixes to complete a chase of 205 for the Rangpur Riders.

Olly Stone

Currently playing in the ILT20, Stone has five wickets in four games for the Dubai Capitals.

Tom Moores

Representing Lumbini Lions in the Nepal Premier League, Moores averaged 24 across seven games, as his side finished last.

Somerset

Tom Abell

Abell took part in the GSL, representing Lahore Qalandars, averaging just under 26 for the campaign. He’s currently with Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 and passed 50 for the first time last week.

Tom Banton

Banton has been making the most of reinvigorated form from 2024, representing Brisbane Heat, MI Emirates, and the Delhi Bulls this winter. He's just blasted an unbeaten 102 off 55 balls for MI Emirates, two games after a quickfire 74.

Craig Overton

Overton made his debut last week for the Pretoria Capitals, where he took one wicket and scored 12 runs. He hasn’t featured for the side since.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore

Kohler-Cadmore is another player who has been caught up in the NOC debacle this winter. He hit consecutive 50s for the Deccan Gladiators in the Abu Dhabi T10, as he helped steer the side to win the competition. He's currently playing for the Sharjah Warriorz, where he opened his campaign with an unbeaten 83.

Surrey

Jamie Overton

Overton has represented Adelaide Strikers in this edition of the BBL. With 11 wickets in nine games, Overton has impressed most with the bat, scoring 191 runs, and only being dismissed twice.

Ollie Pope

Pope joined Overton at the Adelaide Strikers straight after he finished the England tour of New Zealand. He also scored 191 runs but at an average of 21.2.

Chris Jordan

The Surrey white ball captain took seven wickets in seven games for the Hobart Hurricanes.

Laurie Evans

Evans had a quiet time with the Melbourne Renegades, his only score of note being 40 against Sydney Thunder. His muted form has continued for the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders.

Dan Lawrence

Lawrence has had a busy winter, representing: Chennai Braves Jaguars, Melbourne Stars, and the Desert Vipers. An unbeaten 64 for the Stars, and a 49 for the Vipers are his top scores so far.

Tom Curran

Curran joined Lawrence at the Melbourne Stars, where he has played five matches, taking only three wickets, and scoring 82 runs.

Jason Roy

The ex-England opening aficionado is making the most of his exclusion from England squads, representing both the Dhaka Capitals and Sharjah Warriorz this winter, having played for Trinbago Knight Riders towards the backend of the English summer. A top score of 26 this winter marks a disappointing few months for him.

Dom Sibley

Sibley played his first ever franchise match last week, debuting for Khulna Tigers in the BPL. He scored 3 off eight balls opening the innings.

Reece Topley

Topley spent the end of 2024 playing for the New York Strikers in the Abu Dhabi T10 league and is currently out with the Sylhet Strikers in the BPL. He has failed to make an impression thus far, with best figures of 2/45.

Will Jacks

A noticeable absentee from the England squad for their tour of India, Jacks has been in mixed form for the Pretoria Capitals so far in the SA20, having top scored with a 64 on debut.

Jordan Clark

Clark played 2 games with Team Abu Dhabi, in the Abu Dhabi T10 league, impressing with 4-6 on debut.

Sam Curran

Curran’s played a vital role for the Desert Vipers so far in the ILT20, opening the tournament with consecutive unbeaten scores of 50 and 42.

Sussex

George Garton

Garton played three matches for Sydney Thunder in the BBL, only getting one opportunity with the ball, where he took 2-31.

Tymal Mills

The 32-year-old has taken part in both the Abu Dhabi T10 and the ILT20, playing for both the UP Nawabs and Gulf Giants. So far in the ILT20, Mills has some rather underwhelming figures of 2/155 in 15 overs.

Ollie Robinson

Robinson played two games for Bangla Tigers in the Abu Dhabi T20 League, where he went wicketless.

Warwickshire

Moeen Ali

Ali played for the Guyana Amazon Warriors in both the Caribbean Premier League and the Global Super League, helping his side win the CPL through success with both bat and ball. He is currently out in South Africa with the Joburg Super Kings and scored 1 run in his only batting appearance.

Jacob Bethell

The England wonder-kid had an up and down season for the Melbourne Renegades, ending on a high with a fantastic 87 off 50 balls, in his last appearance with the side before heading off to India.

Chris Woakes

Woakes has taken four wickets in three games thus far for the Durban Super Giants in the SA20.

Sam Hain

In one batting appearance so far for the Paarl Royals in the SA20, Hain scored 20 off 23 balls in a losing cause.

Zen Malik

Malik had two outings for Pokhara Avengers in the Nepal Premier League, having a quiet time batting at No.5.

Worcestershire

Jafar Chohan

After a surprise call-up to the BBL, Chohan has played one game for the Sydney Sixers, ending with figures of 0-30 off his four overs.

Dawid Malan

Having had a quiet time for the UP Nawabs in the Abu Dhabi T10, Malan has enjoyed a fantastic start to his time with Fortune Barishal in the BPL, with unbeaten scores of 49 and 56 in his first two appearances.

Jonny Bairstow

Bairstow spent the Abu Dhabi T10 with Team Abu Dhabi, starring strong with 70* off just 30 balls. He is currently with the Joburg Super Kings, refining his form with recent scores of 60 and 43*.

Joe Root

Root is currently thriving in the SA20 for Paarl Royals. Top scores of 62 not out, and a match-winning 92 not out of 60 balls, in a successful chase of 212 has preceded his scheduled return to England's ODI side in India.

Adam Lyth

The 37-year-old has underperformed for both the Gulf Giants, and Delhi Bulls, with a top score of 32 in 8 games this winter.

Adil Rashid

Now out in India with the England squad, Rashid has enjoyed a mixed winter, playing for both the Sharjah Warriorz, and UP Nawabs. Highlights for him came last November, when he took a match-winning 3-6 for UP Nawabs in the Abu Dhabi T10.

Unsigned

Aryaman Varma

The 18-year-old leg-spinner is not contracted to any county but was called up to play for the Dubai Capitals in the ILT20 earlier this month, as a part-time replacement for Jake Fraser-McGurk. He is yet to play.
