Charlie Dean celebrates a New Zealand wicket in the first England-New Zealand ODI at Chester-le-street.

Charlie Dean was among the star performers as England hammered New Zealand in the first ODI between the two sides at Chester-le-Street.

The visitors actually started the day reasonably, at one stage reaching 56 for the loss of just one wicket.

The run out of the well set Georgia Plimmer (29 off 32) precipitated a steady flow of wickets, largely through England's outstanding spin attack.

Charlie Dean finished with figures of 4-38. It was her sixth four-wicket haul in ODI cricket; only Katherine Sciver-Brunt has more women's ODI four-fors than the 23-year-old who currently averages less than 20 with the ball in ODIs.

Sophie Ecclestone and Sarah Glenn took three wickets between them while Amy Jones enjoyed an excellent day behind the stumps. Her catch to dismiss New Zealand captain Sophie Devine was particularly impressive with the ball taking a significant deviation after it kissed Devine's outside edge.

New Zealand were bowled out for 156, a total that England hauled down in rapid time. England openers Tammy Beaumont and Maia Bouchier both scored briskly, putting on 137 for the first wicket in 17.1 overs.

Beaumont and Bouchier scored at a rate of 7.90 runs per over, the quickest ever 100-run stand for England in women's ODI cricket.

Bouchier eventually fell for 67, chipping to Suzie Bates at cover off the bowling of Brooke Halliday. Beaumont survived until the end, finishing on 76 not out, her 29th fifty-plus score for England in women's ODIs.

England won by nine wickets and 172 deliveries to spare. England have only ever successfully chased down a total quicker than that on 11 occasions.

The second ODI takes place in Worcester on Sunday.
