England have announced a 16-man squad for their upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, with Sussex’s left-arm quick George Garton earning a maiden call-up.

“We have been monitoring the progress of George Garton for quite some time,” said England head coach Chris Silverwood. “He has been a significant part of Sussex’s bowling unit in white-ball cricket for an extended period. His ability to bowl quick with his point of difference being a left-armer certainly gives us options in this series, and he deserves his chance at this level.”
Garton has begun this year’s T20 Blast with eight wickets in four matches at an average of 8.37 and economy rate of 5.15.
Fast bowlers Jofra Archer, Saqib Mahmood and Reece Topley are all unavailable due to injuries, while England have also announced that Olly Stone will miss the rest of the summer after suffering a lower back stress fracture.
Silverwood also provided an update on Ben Stokes, who has yet to play this summer due to a fractured finger: “We are pleased that Ben Stokes is returning to action with Durham this weekend after recovering from a fractured finger. If everything goes to plan, I hope he could be available for selection for the Vitality IT20 series against Pakistan next month.”
David Willey and Liam Dawson have both been recalled, as they were for England’s T20Is against Sri Lanka. Each was last in an England squad for last year’s ODI series against Ireland.
The ODI series gets underway on June 29 at Emirates Riverside in Durham.
