India captain Virat Kohli has suggested that teams who win away from home should get increased reward for doing so in the ICC World Test Championship.
Winning overseas in Test cricket stands as the greatest challenge in the modern game, with home teams winning almost twice as many Tests as touring teams – the overall win/loss ratio for teams away from home in the last five years is 0.521. Knowing the scale of the task for touring sides, Kohli thinks that different amounts of points for home and away wins should be introduced from the next edition of the competition onwards.
India’s only home loss since the start of 2013 has come at Pune – the venue for the second #INDvSA Test.

“If you’d have asked me to make the points table, I would give double the points for an away Test win,” he said ahead of the second India v South Africa Test. “That is something that I would have definitely liked to see. Maybe after the first edition.”

The World Test Championship points system has already come under criticism from various corners, with some questioning why Test victories in shorter series are worth more than those in longer series, and why the points aren’t halved if a Test is drawn. Though the first objection can be answered by pointing out that points are awarded for series performance rather than match performance, that goes against the fact that a team winning a five-match series 1-0 will receive fewer points than a team drawing a two-match series 1-1.
India currently lead the World Test Championship table with three wins from three games. Apart from Pakistan and Bangladesh, who have yet to play a Test in the World Test Championship, they are the only team to maintain a perfect record thus far.
