In a WhatsApp debate occasionally verging on the heated, the Wisden trio of Yas Rana, Taha Hashim, and Ben Gardner thrashed out Wisden’s ODI team of the 2000s for the 2000s in Review series.
Though there was space for both Adam Gilchrist and MS Dhoni in the XI, the panel were still faced with a decision over who should stand behind the sticks and who should be relegated to a role in the outfield. In the end however, unlike with many other areas of selection, agreement was quickly reached. Here’s how the conversation unfolded:
BG: The question is though, who keeps?
YR: Dhoni? Gives Gilchrist less to do.
TH: I’d opt for Dhoni.
YR: Dhoni’s quite low in our order so gets a more of a rest.

BG: Probably on balance the better keeper too?
TH: He was more memorable as a limited-overs keeper to me too.
YR: I agree with that Taha.
BG: I know purists sneer, but his stumping technique is close to revolutionary in my opinion. And then there’s the flash run outs.
TH: The no-look run-outs? Very Ronaldinho.
