Coming in at 86-6 after a flurry of wickets, Sam Curran scored a fluent, gutsy 63 on the third day to keep England in the first Test against India at Edgbaston.

In just his second match, Curran rescued England when it looked like they’d crumble without leaving India a testing total to chase in the fourth innings. The highlight came when on 37, he strolled down the wicket before thumping Ashwin over his head for six. He then hit the spinner over his head for four more the very next ball.

He also reached 50 in style, smashing Ishant Sharma over extra cover for his second six of the innings. It wasn’t just the way he scored the runs that impressed, but also the character it took to take on the best team in the world when his side was so far behind in the game.

India were set just 194 to win, but Curran’s innings at least gave England a sniff.

Following his impressive spell on Thursday, where he picked up four wickets, this innings will really excite England fans. In Curran, they appear to have a serious talent with both bat and ball – and a temperament to match.
