Shami’s friend opens up on cricketer’s suicide attempt

Following India’s first-ever World Cup loss to Pakistan in the 2021 T20 World Cup, Shami was the victim of online vitriol, receiving communal abuse and being accused of match-fixing. The incidents allegedly took a mental toll on the pacer, who attempted suicide, according to Shami’s friend Umesh Kumar.

“It also came in the news that he wanted to do something drastic that night," Umesh said said on journalist Shubhankar Mishra's podcast. "It was around 4 AM in the morning when I got up to drink water. I was on my way to the kitchen when I saw that he was standing on the balcony. It was the 19th floor we were living in. I understood what happened. That night of Shami's career, I feel, was the longest.”
