Justin Langer is reportedly set to be appointed Australia men’s head coach as Cricket Australia begin their hiring process for Darren Lehmann’s replacement.
However, on Wednesday CA sought to control widespread reports that Langer’s appointment was imminent, stressing that no appointment has yet been made.
A CA statement said: “The process to be undertaken for the appointment of a new Australian men’s head coach will be discussed and agreed at the CA board meeting this Friday.
“No appointment has been made, and nor will any candidate be put to the board for ratification on Friday. We expect to have a clearer understanding of the approach and appointment timelines following this meeting.”

However, it is understood that Langer is first in line for the position but that specifics are yet to be worked out.
Darren Lehmann resigned from the head coach post following last month’s ball-tampering scandal during Australia’s Test series in South Africa which saw three of his players suspended from the national side.
48-year-old Lehmann has always maintained he knew nothing of the plan and initially stated he would not resign, but following the sanctions handed down to his players said he was “ultimately responsible for the culture of the team.”

Meanwhile, Langer would be a simple appointment for Australia. He has previously taken control of the side on an interim basis in 2016 and long been considered as one of the candidates next in line for the position.
Langer played 105 Tests for Australia during a long career, stretching between 1991 and 2009 and has coached both Western Australia and the Perth Scorchers Big Bash franchise since 2012.
