“Sport Ireland advice indicates that travel to that part of the world should be for essential travel only”

Cricket Ireland has provisionally announced a 14-player squad to travel to Thailand for a quadrangular 50-over series in April – but is seeking advice over the tour as it monitors developments of the coronavirus outbreak.

As of Thursday, there have been 40 cases of Covid-19 in Thailand. In a statement, Cricket Ireland said it is monitoring developments of the outbreak and is “seeking advice from the host nation, the ICC, government and sports bodies over travel advice to the Asian country”.

The 50-over series is set to feature Thailand, Zimbabwe and Netherlands and is part of preparations towards the ICC World Cup Qualifier tournament to be hosted in Sri Lanka in July.

“At present, Sport Ireland advice indicates that travel to that part of the world should be for essential travel only, but the situation is developing on an almost daily basis,” Holdsworth said.

“Since our foremost priority is duty of care to players and support staff, we shall continue to monitor the situation, and comply with the appropriate advice until the point we need to make a definitive decision in the coming weeks.”
