Alastair Cook made a gritty 71 in what could yet be his final Test match innings.

With England winning the toss and choosing to bat on a good surface at The Oval, the 161 Test England opener played a characteristic innings to give England a steady start.

He put on 60 alongside Keaton Jennings and then 73 with Moeen Ali as he compiled a patient 71 from 190 balls against a probing Indian attack.

He and Moeen were batting England into a strong position before Cook chopped a back of a length delivery from Jasprit Bumrah onto his stumps.

Cook looked hugely disappointed not to reach three figures but still received a standing ovation from the Kennington crowd.

Cook is likely to have just one more innings in Test cricket, having announced his retirement earlier this week.
