‘When in doubt, it’s Not Out’ – Controversial Cameron Green catch of Shubman Gill divides opinion

Shubman Gill was controversially given out in the final innings of the World Test Championship final today (June 10), splitting watchers as to whether the decision should have stood or not.

Gill had put on an unbeaten stand with Rohit Sharma worth 41 for the first wicket as India started their unlikely chase of 444. With Scott Boland taking the new ball in place of Mitchell Starc, Gill edged the first delivery of his fourth over.

The ball looked to be falling short of Cameron Green and was to his left. Going with one hand he managed to grasp onto the ball before he fell to the ground and then celebrated the catch. Soft signals have been taken out of the playing conditions for the World Test Championship final meaning the umpire did not have to make one before sending the decision upstairs for the TV umpire to review.

On replays, the ball looked like it might have touched the ground immediately after Green had grasped it with his fingers as he fell to the ground onto his left side. Despite the replay showing that his fingers were under the ball, there looked to be a moment when the ball had also been in contact with the turf at the same time.

Nevertheless, the TV umpire, Richard Kettleborough, decided there was enough evidence to give the decision out, and Gill had to depart for 18.

Unsurprisingly, the close-call generated a significant amount of chatter online, with commentators, former players and fans all wading in with their opinions on the decision.

It was a great effort from Cameron Green but it is the moment immediately after the catch is taken, when the hand turns, that must cause Shubman Gill to be very disappointed.

Green also took a brilliant catch on the previous day’s play, diving in the air to dismiss Ajinkya Rahane.
