South Africa have announced their squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka from November 27, with captain Temba Bavuma making a comeback, among others.
Bavuma, Jansen, Coetzee included
Bavuma will be captaining a 14-member Test squad for the home series, revealed South Africa Test head coach Shukri Conrad. Having missed the recent tour of Bangladesh due to a left elbow injury, he is cleared to play.
Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee are back in the squad after 11 months, having last played in the India series earlier this year. The duo will bolster South Africa's pace attack comprising Kagiso Rabada, Dane Paterson and Wiaan Mulder. On the other hand, Senuran Muthusamy part of the outfit that toured Bangladesh during their 2-0 clean sweep, has been retained as one of the frontline spinners alongside Keshav Maharaj.
The first match will be played on Wednesday (November 27) at Kingsmead Stadium in Durban followed by the second on Thursday (December 5) at St George’s Park in Gqeberha.
South Africa are realistically in contention for making it to the 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC) final. They need to win their remaining four matches – two against Sri Lanka and two against Pakistan – to guarantee themselves a spot in the final. They will still be in with a chance, with three wins, but have to depend on other results.
