The first round of the Buchi Babu tournament 2024 was played between August 15 and 18. Here's how the notable names performed.

Jharkhand defeated Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat succumbed to a loss at the hands of Railways, while the matches between Chhattisgarh-Jammu & Kashmir and Haryana-Mumbai ended in a draw.

Ishan Kishan (Jharkhand)

114 (107) and 41* (58)

Playing his first red-ball game since missing out on a central contract earlier this year, Kishan had as good a start as he could have hoped for. After smashing an 86-ball hundred, besides his sharp work with the gloves in the first innings, the wicketkeeper-batter sealed a crunch match against Madhya Pradesh by hitting two sixes in the dying stages of the second innings.

Sarfaraz Khan (Mumbai)

37 (95) and 29 (18)

Sarafraz, who made his Test debut earlier this year, had a mediocre outing against Haryana. Captaining Mumbai, he could only manage 37 and 29 across the two innings. With Virat Kohli and KL Rahul available for selection for the Bangladesh Tests, his place in the XI would depend a lot on how he performs in the remaining domestic matches, including the Duleep Trophy.

Abdul Samad (Jammu and Kashmir)

58 (70) and 0-19

Jammu and Kashmir recorded the most standout batting performance in the first round, notching up 587-9 in the only innings they batted during their draw against Chhattisgarh. And Abdul Samad played his part in that, with a 70-ball 58 coming in at No.4. His innings was studded with nine fours and a six.

Ashutosh Sharma (Railways)

43 (25) and 6 (7)

Ashutosh made a name for himself in this year’s IPL as a finisher for Punjab Kings, hammering 189 runs at a strike rate of 167.26. The change in format to red-ball cricket didn't change his approach. Playing for Railways, he batted at No.8 and contributed with a 25-ball 43, with his team looking for some quick runs en route to a total of 570 in the first innings. In the second, he was dismissed for a seven-ball six batting at No.4.

Musheer Khan (Mumbai)

32 (70) and 40 (126)

2-71 and 3-34

Musheer, Sarfaraz’s teenage brother, starred in India’s runners-up finish in the 2024 Under-19 World Cup with his all-round display. Having converted his maiden first-class ton into a double hundred in last year’s Ranji Trophy knockouts, he showed signs of having what it takes to succeed in the red-ball format too.

Against Haryana, he had a steady start, returning a 70-ball 32 and a 126-ball 40 across both innings. With the ball, he took five wickets, including a 3-34 in the fourth innings, giving Haryana a scare in their run-chase of 147.

Yudhvir Singh (Jammu and Kashmir)

1-29 and 0-24

Yudhvir represented Lucknow Super Giants in this year’s IPL. Playing for Jammu and Kashmir, he didn't have a memorable outing, taking a solitary wicket across innings, and going at six runs per over (albeit only across four overs) in the second.

Upendra Yadav (Railways)

10 (21)

Yadav has been a part of India A and the Rest of India squads. The wicketkeeper-batter was also part of the Sunrisers Hyderabad squad in the IPL but is yet to debut. Leading the Railways to a win in the first round, he took four catches and inflicted a stumping but managed only a 21-ball 10 with the bat. He didn’t bat in the second innings.

Priyank Panchal (Gujarat)

11 (10) and 13 (10)

Former Gujarat captain Priyank Panchal has been a familiar name in the Indian domestic circuit for quite some time now. Despite getting called up to the Test squad, he has yet to make his international debut. The veteran’s performance in the first round of the Buchi Babu tournament left a lot to be desired, however, as he returned scores of 11 and 13 against Railways.

Nishant Sindhu (Haryana)

91 (181) and 22 (19)

0-33 and 2-50

Another Under-19 star but from the 2022 batch, Sindhu fetched INR 60 lakh from Chennai Super Kings in the IPL this year. He has a decent first-class record for Haryana, having scored 1,326 runs at an average of 39 while taking 46 wickets at 27.89.

With the bat in the first round, he made an 181-ball 91, helping his team post 419. Though he went wicketless in the first innings, he kept things tight, maintaining an economy of 1.94 in 17 overs. In the second innings, he returned figures of 2-50 from his 22.3 overs.

Anshul Kamboj (Haryana)

1-56 amd 0-32

Kamboj was instrumental in Haryana claiming their first Vijay Hazare Trophy last year and won an IPL contract for Mumbai Indians, where he represented the franchise in three matches. However, the pace-bowling all-rounder didn’t have the best of starts in the first round against Mumbai, with only a wicket to his name across two innings while conceding 88 runs.
