England men's Test coach Brendon McCullum, who has been appointed white-ball coach as well

The ECB announced on Tuesday (September 3) that England men's Test coach Brendon McCullum will take over as coach of the men's white-ball team as well, following Matthew Mott's departure in July.

On July 30, England had announced that Mott had stepped down from his role as coach of the white-ball setup. This came on the back of consecutive unsuccessful tournament defenses, at the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup.

There had been widespread speculation at the time about Mott's future, as well as that of captain Jos Buttler. The latter has remained in his role for now, but England appointed Marcus Trescothick as the interim head coach of the white-ball team.

On Tuesday, the ECB made the decision to appoint Brendon McCullum, coach of the Test team since May 2022, as coach of the white-ball sides as well, in a "senior team restructure".

Brendon McCullum set to take over England white-ball teams

The board confirmed that McCullum has signed a contract extension through to the end of 2027, and that he will take charge of the white-ball team from January 2025, when England travel to India before playing the Champions Trophy. Trescothick will remain in charge for the series against Australia later this month, as well as England's tour of the Caribbean in October-November.

ECB managing director Rob Key said: "I’m delighted that Brendon has chosen to do both roles now with England. I believe we are incredibly fortunate that a coach of his quality is prepared to commit wholeheartedly to English cricket.

"Being able to align all teams now is particularly exciting and we look forward to taking on all challenges that come our way. For the last two years, constant clashes between formats have made it challenging for the white-ball environment; fortunately, these are easing starting from January.

"The timing of the schedule (from January) will allow him to dedicate the necessary focus to both roles, and we’re confident this restructure will bring out the best in our players and coaching staff."

McCullum himself said he felt "energised" by the prospect of leading both teams and that he seeks to create an environment where "everyone can thrive". The former New Zealand opener had previously been backed by former England players Mark Butcher and Eoin Morgan to take over this role.

Following England's home Test series against Sri Lanka, McCullum is set to take a break at home in New Zealand before returning to join the Test side for their tours of Pakistan and New Zealand at the end of the year.
