Bangladesh's players celebrate with trophy after winning the second and last Test cricket match between Pakistan and Bangladesh, at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium

Bangladesh, gradually returning to normalcy after months of political unrest, is likely to host the Test series against South Africa as planned later this year.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board is optimistic about hosting South Africa for a two-match Test series, scheduled to start on October 21, amid the political turmoil the country went through following the ouster of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

"We are hopeful that the tour will commence as per schedule and we will officially announce it in the coming days," a BCB official was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

Hasina’s regime was accused of carrying out violent crackdowns against protestors fighting against the country’s controversial quota system, leaving hundreds dead. She eventually fled the country, which worsened the situation, with reports of attacks against minorities emerging.

Dhaka and Chattogram to host the series

In the wake of the massive unrest, the ICC shifted the 2024 Women’s World Cup from Bangladesh to the United Arab Emirates. Hence, the tour would be the first international match in the country since Bangladesh played Sri Lanka in April 2024. If the series goes ahead as planned, it will be held at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka and Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.

Bangladesh are currently in India to play two Tests and three T20Is, starting September 18. They are coming after a memorable 2-0 Test series clean sweep in Pakistan. On the other hand, in a historic first, South Africa will begin their three-match ODI series against Afghanistan on the same day in Sharjah.
