Mitchell Owen smashed a 48-ball hundred to help Tasmania beat South Australia in a 2024-25 One-Day Cup game at Adelaide.
Mackenzie Harvey’s 118-ball 149 and Daniel Drew’s 55-ball 63 took South Australia to 329-9 after Tasmania captain Jordan Silk won the toss and opted to field at Adelaide Oval. For the tourists, Beau Webster claimed 3-48.
Never in their history had Tasmania successfully chased a target this big in List A cricket. Their previous best was 317, against Queensland at Townsville in the 2018-19 One-Day Cup. On that occasion, they had completed the chase with four wickets and six balls in hand.
Owen had attained stardom with his heroics in the BBL 2024-25 final a month ago. On that occasion, his 42-ball 108 (six fours, 11 sixes) – the joint-fastest hundred in BBL history – had helped the Hobart Hurricanes chase 183 against the Sydney Thunder.
Fastest fifty, second-fastest hundred
Here, too, he led the charge, hitting two fours and a six in the first over, from Henry Thornton. He took only 17 balls to reach his fifty, in only the fifth over. By then, he had hit eight fours and two sixes.
In the process, Owen broke Jake Fraser-McGurk’s record for the fastest List A fifty on Australian soil: Fraser-McGurk had taken 18 balls – interestingly, for South Australia against Tasmania – to bring up his half-century at Adelaide during the 2023-24 One-Day Cup.
Unlike Fraser-McGurk, however, Owen slowed down – if that phrase can be used – once he got to fifty. The second fifty took him 31 balls. Still, at 48 balls, this is the second-fastest List A hundred on Australian soil. Fraser-McGurk’s 29-ball hundred in the same match is the fastest in List A history.
Wes Agar eventually bowled Owen for a 69-ball 149 (Tasmania were only 197 at that point, but in only 20 overs). In all, he hit 14 fours and 10 sixes. Had he got a run off the 69th ball instead, Owen would have been the fourth-fastest to a List A 150 anywhere in the world, after AB de Villiers (64), Jos Buttler (65), and Matthew Wade (68).
