Bangladesh beat India by 59 runs in the final to win the men’s U19 Asia Cup. Iqbal Hasan Emon and Azizul Tamim took three wickets each to defend their low score of 198.

Bangladesh won their second title at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium after winning the title for the first time at the expense of hosts United Arab Emirates last year. On this particular occasion, they outclassed eight-time champions India.

Asked to bat first by India, Bangladesh lost openers Zawad Abrar (20) and Kalam Siddiki Aleen (1) in the powerplay. Mohammad Shibab James (40) and Rizan Hossain (47) shared a 62-run partnership to add the bulk of the runs but they were dismissed by Ayush Mhatre and Hardik Raj respectively.

Farid Hasan also added 39 off 49 deliveries but wickets kept falling around him at regular intervals and they got bundled out for 198. Yudhajit Guha, Chetan Sharma and Hardik Raj took two wickets each to put India in the driving position at the midway point.

Bangladesh bowlers turn the game over its head

Bangladesh, however, found themselves back into the game with the wickets of Ayush Mhatre (1) and 13-year-old star batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi (9) inside five overs. Their dismissals dented India’s scoring rate.

Karthikeya KP (21) and captain Mohammad Amaan (26) stitched a 29-run partnership between them. The 20th over turned out to be a game-turning moment. Karthikeya lost his wicket to Iqbal Emon in the third delivery of the over and Nikhil Kumar was dismissed for a duck just two balls later.

At 73-5 after 21 overs, India were in a delicate situation and the ensuing middle-order collapse made matters worse. Harvansh Pangalia (6) and Kiran Chormale (1) were also dismissed cheaply and once the Indian captain Amaan returned to the pavillion in the 31st over, Bangladesh had their tails up. Fired up in the field, the celebrated each wicket vociferously, with a strong crowd also adding to the boisterous atmosphere.

The two teams have history, with pushing, shoving and general aggression during the 2020 Under-19 World Cup final seeing five players punished by the ICC.

Lower down the order, Hardik Raj played a brief cameo of 24 (21) to provide a glimmer of hope but Azizul Tamim trapped him lbw to end the Indian's resistance.

Chetan Sharma (10) was the last wicket to fall as India got bowled out for 139. Bangladesh captain Tamim registered figures of 3-8 bowling 2.2 overs while Iqbal Emon also picked up three wickets for 24 runs. Debasish Deba was economical and gave away runs at a rate of just 2.83 in six overs.

Iqbal Emon won the Player of the Match award for his dazzling spell in the final and also went on to clinch the Player of the Tournament award after scalping 13 wickets.
