The Bangladesh Cricket Board has refuted allegations of a delay in the disbursement of prize money pertaining to the men's ODI World Cup, played in India last year.
There had been media reports of “a BCB councilor” alleging the board of deliberately delaying the disbursement of prize money for the 2023 Men’s World Cup in India to the Bangladeshi cricketers. The BCB denied these allegations in a press release that refuted the “untrue remarks made by the concerned councilor” and “vehemently protested the insinuations of malpractice”. Such allegations are baseless and undermine the integrity of the BCB's operations.
While there has been a delay, the BCB clarified that the delay was not “deliberate or due to any negligence on the part of the Board”. They added that prize money for major ICC events like the World Cup typically arrive “within a few months following the tournament's conclusion”.
The release also mentioned that the BCB “promptly submitted the necessary invoice to the ICC” once the World Cup was over, but the process has encountered delays “due to taxation formalities and compliance issues”. These “administrative hurdles” have impacted other participating countries as well.
To expedite the procedure, the BCB appointed “renowned international accounting firm” Deloitte Haskins & Sells LLP in India, who had the “relevant applications” of all the Bangladesh players who participated in the World Cup.
The BCB added that they have been informed that that the formalities have only recently been completed”, and they should receive the prize money “in the coming weeks”.
Bangladesh finished eighth out of ten teams at the World Cup, Sri Lanka and the Netherlands. The three teams were tied on four points each, and were only separated by net run rate. However, that was enough to earn them a berth at the eight-team 2025 Champions Trophy.
