Oliver Davies, the brother of Australia spinner Joel Davies, recorded the fastest double century in Sheffield Shield history against Tasmania at Cricket Central, Sydney, on Friday, October 9.
Oliver Davies makes history in Sheffield Shield
Opening the batting for New South Wales, Oliver Davies was at his best in the ongoing Sheffield Shield 2026/27 round, blasting the Tasmania bowling attack to all parts. He completed his double century off just 186 deliveries, making it the fastest double hundred in the competition's history.
The 26-year old finished the innings on 253 off 225 balls, which included 38 fours and four sixes. In the process, he also became the first player since Caleb Jewell in February 2024 to register a double century in the tournament.
Davies added a massive 250-run stand with Jack Edwards (109) to put his side in a strong position at 441 for 6 at the end of second day's play. Earlier in the match, New South Wales skittled out Tasmania for 245, with 21-year-old leg-spinner Jake Scott claiming 5 for 35.
This knock has come as a change of fortunes for Davies, who had a miserable run in the previous Sheffield Shield season, where he managed only 123 runs from nine innings with solitary fifty. Before this game, he averaged 32.73 in first-class cricket with three centuries to his credit.
