Australia fight back after a rapid century from India opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the first Youth Test in Chennai

Australia Under-19 clawed back into the youth Test match against India, despite a blazing ton by 13-year-old India opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi in Chennai.

India resumed the day on 103, with Suryavanshi unbeaten on 81 off 47 balls. Suryavanshi only took 11 balls to reach his landmark in record time but soon fell afterwards for a 62-ball 104. His innings contained 14 fours and four sixes. India soon fell from 1-133 to 151-3, owing to a double strike from Thomas Brown in the 24th over. No.3 batter Nitya J Pandya perished for nine off 20 balls, while Karthikeya K P failed to open his account.

Captain Soham Patwardhan came in at five, stitching a 52-run stand with opener Vihan before the latter was dismissed by Vishwa Ramkumar for a 108-ball 76, including 13 fours and a six.

Bowlers script Australia's comeback

Patwardhan featured in another half-century stand, this time with Abhigyan Kundu, who was looking in good touch for his 40-ball 32 before falling to Ramkumar. After Patwardhan returned to the pavilion for 35, with India at 262-6, the hosts lost the remaining four wickets for 34 runs. Ramkumar finished with 4-79, with Brown picking up 2-79 and Addison Sheriff 2-5.

India would be kicking themselves for not capitalising on the rapid start as they managed only a negligible first-innings lead of three runs.

Batting in the second innings, Steven Hogan was bowled by Mohamed Enaan for a duck after managing only 15 in the first. Opener Riley Kingsell, who scored 53 earlier, again got off to a start. However, he was dismissed near his half-century for a 57-ball 48. Ollie Peake (32) and Zac Curtain (19) were the other two wickets to fall at the end of the day’s play, with Australia going to stumps at 110-4 in 39 overs.
