An anonymous tweet purporting to be from a former England international cricketer has sparked online speculation regarding the identity of the player behind the post.

The tweet appeared on the popular Twitter account Fesshole, where users can post anonymous tweets out to the account’s 90,000-plus following. The tweet read: “I’m a retired professional cricketer who managed to play a handful of times for England. Although I did my best for them, it was just a job for me. I support another national team quite fervently, and secretly always want England to lose.”

The post predictably got some traction among cricket fans, with many speculations over the identity of the player behind the post.

Despite the post stating that the player only represented England “a handful of times”, Twitter users were quick to suggest Kevin Pietersen as a possible candidate.

A number of the suggestions centred on England players born outside of England; Owais Shah, Nick Compton and Boyd Rankin were all popular responses. Although there were a variety of responses – from Jason Gallian to Gavin Hamilton – there was little consensus.

Who do you think the player behind the post was?
