Former Australia all-rounder Andrew McDonald has been announced as the head coach of the men’s Birmingham-based team in The Hundred, which starts in July 2020.
The 38-year-old’s stock has risen in recent times, having become the first person to win the Australian domestic treble as a coach since the Big Bash League (BBL) was launched. Earlier this year he took Melbourne Renegades to their first BBL title, while also winning the Sheffield Shield and One-Day Cup with Victoria.

“The Hundred is a tournament that’s generating interest across the globe and the opportunity to be part of it as head coach of the Birmingham team is something that I’m relishing,” McDonald told the ECB, who will be assisted by former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori.
“Being based at Edgbaston will give this team access to some of the best cricket facilities in the world, but it’s also a venue that’s very well-known for its atmosphere and having such a passionate home crowd behind us will be fantastic.”
McDonald is the second person to be announced as a coach for the ECB’s new 100-ball competition, after the Manchester-based men’s side announced the appointment of former Australia batsman Simon Katich.

“The Hundred will feature world-class players on a big stage playing exciting 100 ball cricket,” said Sanjay Patel, the managing director of the Hundred, in an ECB statement. “A year out, we’re attracting world-class coaches and Andrew is a fantastic appointment for the men’s Birmingham-based team.”
