It will be the first time de Villiers would play in a professional capacity since he retired in 2021. The last tournament he played was that year's edition of the IPL, in which he scored 212 runs for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, before they bowed out of the competition in the Eliminator. During his international career, De Villiers scored 8,765 runs in 114 Tests, 9,577 runs in ODIs, and 1,672 T20I runs, as well as playing 340 T20 games across his career with 9,424 runs from them.
