Wisden Cricket Monthly 2024 Test XI of the year

Wisden Cricket Monthly has named their 2024 men's Test XI of the year, with young stars dominating the side.

The XI features six players who are aged 26 or under and three who made their Test debuts in 2024. A quartet of England batters dominate the top seven, with Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook and Jamie Smith all selected, as well as Gus Atkinson in the pace attack, while there are also two names from India, three from New Zealand and one from Sri Lanka.

There were two players selected by 100 percent of the panel, both from India, with one being Yashasvi Jaiswal - whose 209 in Visakhapatnam against England was singled out as his best knock of the year - and the other being Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah took 71 wickets in 13 Tests in a truly remarkable individual performance in 2024. Not only was it Bumrah's best year in the format, but one of the statistically great years by any fast-bowler in recent memory.

Kamindu Mendis is the lone Sri Lanka representative in the side, having risen up the batting order after coming back into the sides and hitting two centuries against Bangladesh early in the year. Centuries against England and New Zealand sealed his outstanding year and his place in the side.

The side was selected by a panel of 41 cricket writers and took into account performances from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024. It was a year in which Test cricket boomed, building to the climax of the race for the World Test Championship final and the most compelling final phase to the round-robin stage of the competition yet.
