Lyon’s stint at Lancashire has been one of the major talking points in the early stages of the Championship season. Having originally signed to be available for Lancashire for the whole season, Cricket Australia then only made Lyon available for seven County Championship matches. He made his debut for the county in their rain-dominated opening round of the season against Surrey, playing alongside England spinner Tom Hartley and only bowling two wicketless overs. It’s not yet clear whether that will count as on of his seven games.
In better weather at the Utilita Bowl for the second round, Hampshire reached 110-2 after winning the toss. Ali Orr and Fletcha Middleton fell cheaply, leaving Vince to rebuild with Nick Gubbins. Lyon came into the attack before Lunch and sent down six overs before the interval without taking a wicket.
However, when he came back on after Lunch he struck immediately. He bowled his first ball back into the attack pitched full and on Vince’s pads. The home captain attempted to push it round the corner in between the short leg and leg slip fielders. But the ball looped up off Vince’s inside edge and safely into Tom Bruce’s hands at leg slip. Vince departed for 56.
Having broken the established partnership Lyon then got rid of Gubbins later in the session, the No.3 looking to drive but caught at first slip. Hampshire went into Tea with no further wickets lost on 216-4.
