Cricket Australia are investigating Glenn Maxwell after he had to be hospitalised following an “alcohol-related” incident.

On January 19, Glenn Maxwell was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital by ambulance on January 19 after an “alcohol-related incident”, on which no further detail is available at this point. The hospital released Maxwell shortly afterwards.

According to a report in The Telegraph, Maxwell had been watching a performance by the band Six and Out, which features Brett Lee.

Cricket Australia had announced their squad for the ODIs against the West Indies before the news on Maxwell broke. They had rested Maxwell, along with Mitchell Marsh, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and captain Pat Cummins.

“Cricket Australia is aware of an incident involving Glenn Maxwell in Adelaide at the weekend and is seeking further information,” ran a statement from the board. “It is not related to him being replaced in the ODI squad, a decision that was made following the BBL and based on his individual management plan. Maxwell is expected to return for the T20 series. No further comment will be made at this time.”

However, Cricket Australia are currently “investigating” Maxwell on this matter.

Maxwell has had his share of unusual accidents of late. In 2022, he fell at a friend’s 50th birthday party, fractured his left fibula, and missed cricket for five months. During the 2023 World Cup, he fell off a golf card, suffered from concussion, missed two matches, but returned to make a back-against-the-wall 201 not out against Afghanistan – one of the greatest innings in ODI history.

From 138 ODIs, Maxwell has 3,895 runs and 70 wickets, and was part of Australia’s World Cup-winning squads of 2015 and 2023. He won the T20 World Cup with them too, in 2021, and has 2,275 runs and 39 wickets from 100 games in the format. A much sought-after cricketer in the Twenty20 leagues around the world, Maxwell resigned as Melbourne Stars captain earlier this month.
