In the first U19 Test at Beckenham, India batted first, scoring 540 runs. The visitors’ captain Ayush Mhatre, who endured a poor run of form despite his team’s win in the Youth ODIs, turned back his fortunes with a 115-ball 102 on his U19 Test debut. England in reply made 439, with Rocky Flintoff (93) top scoring. Skipper Hamza Shaikh (84), Ekansh Singh (59) and Ralphie Albert (50) also played their part.
Cushioned by a 101-run first-innings lead, Vaibhav Suryavanshi gave India a solid start with a 39-ball fifty. Vihaan Malhotra (63) and RS Ambrish (53) made vital contributions as they set up a 350-run target. Archie Vaughan, meanwhile, starred for England with a 6-84.
England’s second innings was spearheaded by Shaikh’s 112. Ben Mayes and Thomas Rew also struck fifties, but they were in a spot of bother after slipping to 258-7 with considerable time left on the final day. Albert (9 not out) and Jack Home (7 not out) then batted for 11.1 overs to secure a draw.
