How Tammy Beaumont’s post-WWC17 final chicken splurge ended badly for Heather Knight

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Speaking on a Sky Sports Watchalong of the 2017 Women’s World Cup final, Tammy Beaumont regaled a hilarious tale about how she spent £130 at a chicken shop hours after winning the showpiece match at Lord’s – and only got to eat three chips from her haul!

“We had a pretty good night,” said the Player of the Tournament. “I remember we didn’t eat anything afterwards in the changing rooms, we were just there. We managed to get the three girls that weren’t in the squad but were professional cricketers, they got to come up as well, and we just really enjoyed that moment for quite a while.

“And then we snuck into an ICC after-party for a bit and then realised at about midnight after we got back to the hotel that we hadn’t eaten anything, so I went across the road to a chicken shop and spent about £130 on my credit card to get burgers and chips and chicken nuggets and everything for everyone.

“And the best part was I got back to the team room and everyone was there from the media and I had literally about three chips out of £130-worth. That was my night! I remember quite a few of them tucking into the burgers, I was gutted. I’d been so good for months.”

It turns out that Beaumont might have had a lucky escape, with her captain Heather Knight later revealing how some “dodgy chicken” made her feel unwell that same evening.

“A couple of hours later I actually projectile-vomited on a Merc [Mercedes-Benz car] around the corner, and I’d only had one beer,” she said. “Sorry for the graphic description, but I didn’t have the best night, but luckily I was well enough to enjoy the celebrations in the dressing room.”
