When Wisden predicted India’s downfall at the World Cup

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Played over two days, New Zealand’s semi-final victory over India at last year’s World Cup will live long in the memory.

Despite half-centuries from Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson, the Black Caps’ total of 239-8 left India looking favourites at the halfway stage.

But the game was turned on its head quickly, with Matt Henry and Trent Boult running through India’s acclaimed top order of KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to leave the 2011 winners 5-3 inside four overs.

India did stage a comeback: Ravindra Jadeja blitzed 77 from 59 balls and although he perished with 13 balls left in the innings, MS Dhoni, one of the most accomplished finishers the game has ever seen, remained at the crease. Nevertheless, a bullet throw from Martin Guptill ended Dhoni’s relatively sedate knock of 50 from 72 balls, all but finishing the contest.

Here’s the twist – we knew it was coming.

From issue 20 of Wisden Cricket Monthly

In Wisden Cricket Monthly’s World Cup preview (issue 20), WCM magazine editor Jo Harman jotted down his thoughts on India, outlining the side’s nightmare scenario. Believe it or not, this is what Nostraharman wrote:

“After sailing through the group stage, their top three are nipped out early in the semis, exposing their middle order who have had precious little time in the middle and Dhoni, unable to find the middle like he used to, can’t see them home.”

Down to a tee. And before you ask – no, Jo didn’t get in the DeLorean with Doc Brown to grab the 2020 Wisden Almanack ahead of time.
