Watch: Rinku Singh blasts five sixes in five balls to snatch stunning, world-record T20 chase

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Watch: Rinku Singh, in bludgeoning five consecutive sixes, helped Kolkata Knight Riders pull off a record-breaking chase against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.

When GT captain Rashid Khan took a 17th over hat-trick, Kolkata Knight Riders needed 50 runs from just 21 balls, with just three wickets in hand.

KKR No.5 Rinku Singh, unperturbed by the quick-fire dismissals of IPL stars Andre Russell, Sunil Narine and Shardul Thakur, took an over to settle things down – and then started swinging.

With 39 runs needed from the last eight balls, Rinku Singh struck a four and a six, before regaining the strike after the final over’s first ball to strike five – yes, FIVE – consecutive maximums.

The 31 runs were the most ever struck in the final over of the second innings of any T20 match. The record comes after Vijay Shankar helped GT hit 41 from the final 11 balls of the first innings, in an adrenaline-fueled Ahmedabad run fest.

It looked as though the hosts had put enough on the board, their 204-4 largely thanks to Shankar (63* from 24), Sai Sudharsan (53 from 38) and Shubman Gill (39 from 31). Mohammed Shami and impact sub Josh Little then took early wickets as KKR’s chase got off to a shaky start.

A phenomenal knock from Venkatesh Iyer (83 from 40) alongside captain Nitish Rana (45 from 29) gave KKR a glimmer of hope before a phenomenal Rashid Khan turned the tie on its head.

25-year-old Rinku Singh – fresh off the back of a 46 against RCB at Eden Gardens – had other ideas, and completed the most unlikely of heists. He finished 48* from 21 deliveries.
