Rahul Dravid‘s career is remembered for his great batting record, but a less-talked-about aspect of his playing time was his crafty off-spin that wasn’t utilised much in international cricket.

One of India’s finest cricketers of the modern age, Dravid was usually found in the slip cordon while fielding – holding on to blinders over the course of his career to end as India’s most successful fielder. He briefly donned the wicketkeeper’s gloves as well. But there wasn’t much of Dravid, the bowler, on display through his career: in 509 matches, he bowled only 51 overs.

Interestingly, he didn’t bowl post-2000 in one-day cricket, and ended with four wickets in the format. Two of these came in a single over, when Dravid bowled a nine-over spell against South Africa in 2000.

Bowling fourth-change in the one-dayer in Kochi after the specialist bowlers had been rendered ineffective, Dravid ended up being the pick of the bowlers in South Africa’s innings of 302. He snared two wickets, both in the 43rd over, after the opposition had put on a 235-run opening stand.

He first captured Gary Kirsten (who would later go on to coach Dravid), with the opener slashing one right to backward point to give India a breakthrough. Just four deliveries later, he foxed Lance Klusener in the air, inviting him to play at a flighted delivery and getting a return catch.

The twin strikes gave him the opportunity to bowl in the two ODIs that followed, where he bowled just three overs combined. Post that, Dravid’s bowling wasn’t seen in ODIs, even though he did return to bowl a one-off spell in a Test against West Indies in 2002, where he got his only wicket in the format.

Here’s Dravid’s two wickets from the Kochi ODI in 2000:
