Watch: MS Dhoni completes lightning stumping, pulls off one-glove run out in wicketkeeping masterclass

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch: MS Dhoni showed he’s still one of the best in the business behind the stumps in the Chennai Super Kings-Sunrisers Hyderabad clash in the Indian Premier League (IPL) today (April 21).

The former India captain effected an excellent stumping to see off Mayank Agarwal and pulled off a sharp run out in the final over as CSK claimed the advantage over Sunrisers Hyderabad, keeping them to 134-7 in 20 overs.

With Dhoni 41 years old and having already flirted with giving up the CSK captaincy, there is regular debate over whether each IPL season could be his last. However, he has enjoyed a renaissance in 2023, striking at 211 in four innings so far, helping CSK to third in the table.

He has remained as assured as ever in the field, and supplied a reminder of his continued excellence against SRH. He took a top catch standing up to Maheesh Theekshana, with Aiden Markram aiming a full-blooded cut shot and getting an edge behind. Then his lightning hands were on display, completing a stumping to get rid of Agarwal, who came down the track to Ravindra Jadeja and was beaten. Finally, he capped off the innings with a pinpoint run out, taking off one glove to allow himself to throw more easily and aiming true to find Washington Sundar short.

In the second innings, Dhoni was shown on the big screen sitting on a table inside the CSK dressing room, to a rapturous reception from the Chepauk crowd. He had provided an example of just why he is so loved by the CSK faithful.
