Watch: Subhranshu Senapati, an Odisha cricketer yet to play in the IPL, ran out Gujarat’s Darshan Nalkande in the dying stages of Qualifier 1 of IPL 2023, moments after MS Dhoni had asked him to calm down with deep breaths after a misfield.

Gujarat Titans were chasing 173 for victory on a typical Chepauk wicket last night (May 23). They have established themselves as the masters of the chase since their IPL debut last year, but faltered in front of the Chennai’s spinners on a slow pitch last night.

Ravindra Jadeja and Maheesh Theekshana combined to take 4-46 in eight overs. At 102-6 after 15 overs, Gujarat needed 71 runs in 30 balls with Rashid Khan and Vijay Shankar at the crease.

The game was firmly in Chennai’s grasp until Rashid began to tee off. Rashid had already scored a 32-ball 79 against Mumbai Indians a couple of weeks ago, and was on 25 from 11 balls by the end of the 17th over last night.

The equation had suddenly come down to a much more manageable 39 off three overs.

Matheesha Pathirana came to bowl the 18th over. Rashid drove a low full toss to Senapati, the substitute fielder, at mid-off. Senapati misfielded, allowing the batters to complete an otherwise tight single easily.

Sensing the enormity of the situation and the pressure the youngster must have been under, Dhoni gestured towards him to take a deep breath to calm him down.

Shankar fell next ball, as Ruturaj Gaikwad took a superb diving catch at mid-wicket. With three balls left in the over, new man Darshan Nalkande needed to get Rashid back on strike. He squeezed out a yorker towards Senapati and took off for a single.

This time Senapati was quick to gather and release the ball and hit the bull’s eye at the non-striker’s end. Nalkande was so short of his ground that the on-field umpire did not bother to refer to the tv umpire.

While Rashid got back on strike, Gujarat did not get a run and lost another wicket, increasing the pressure on Rashid. They eventually lost by 15 runs, and CSK entered their tenth IPL final.
