Watch: The most gutted a player has ever been after getting out?

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

South Africa batsman Sinethemba Qeshile was dismissed for 97 playing for Warriors in their first-class encounter against Titans today.

While, in itself, that’s unremarkable, if galling, his reaction was something else altogether. The last man out in a total of 392, the right-hander sunk to his haunches immediately after chopping on, dropping his bat, covering his face with his hand, and staying motionless for a full 20 seconds, before eventually wrenching himself from the crease.

Opposition bowler Lizaad Williams attempted to offer a consoling handshake, Flintoff-Lee-style, but to no avail, with non-striker Basheeru-Deen Walters having time to wander slowly from his end, stand by Qeshile for a time, and remove his gloves before the crushed player finally moved.

What might explain the despondent reaction is that this isn’t the first time Qeshile has been cut short just before reaching a hundred, and he is still waiting for his maiden red-ball century. In the 2018/19 season, he was dismissed for 99 against Knights, and he now has 11 unconverted first-class half-centuries.

The 21-year-old is rated as one of South Africa’s most promising young talents. He does have a List A ton to his name, as well as two T20I caps won against Sri Lanka in early 2019.
