Watch: During his final List A game in 2018, Shivnarine Chanderpaul played an unfortunate part in the dismissal of his son, Tagenarine, as the pair were batting together for Guyana.

The duo were playing against the Windward Islands in the semi-final of the 2018 Super50, West Indies’ domestic List A competition. Chasing 287 to win, the elder Chanderpaul came out to join his son at the fall of the first batter, Chandrapaul Hemraj.

They put on 13 runs for the second wicket, with Tagenarine the aggressor, moving to 12 at a run a ball, and Shivnarine beginning cautiously, scoring three off his first 13 deliveries. He attempted to up the ante with a firm strike down the ground, but could only succeed in inflicting a blow on his own team. Windward Islands bowler Ryan John stuck out a boot and deflected the ball back towards the stumps, and with Tagenarine Chanderpaul out of his ground, a run out was the result.

The dismissal, which left Guyana 20-2, would prove to be crucial. Though Shivnarine Chanderpaul made 34, his side were unable to fully recover and were bowled out for 231.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul is regarded as one of West Indies’ greatest ever batters, making over 20,000 international runs with a Test average in excess of 50 and an ODI average above 40. He made 41 hundreds in his trademark style, something he shares with his son.

Tagenarine Chanderpaul is yet to make his West Indies debut, but is in line to do so against Australia after making a century in a warm-up game against a Prime Minister’s XI.
