Watch: Shaheen Shah Afridi dismissed Jason Roy with the first ball of the innings in a Men’s Hundred 2023 match at the Kia Oval.
Welsh Fire posted 138-6 at the Kia Oval after Tom Abell opted to bat. Wicketkeeper Joe Clarke batted through the innings with a 46-ball 69 not out, while Ben Green smashed a 16-ball 25 from No.7 after they were 70-5.
For hosts Oval Invincibles, Gus Atkinson claimed 3-26 and Tom Curran 2-27, while Zak Chappell conceded only 15 off his 20 balls.
Abell then got Shaheen Shah Afridi to bowl first up, to Jason Roy. In Welsh Fire’s season opener, Shaheen had found prodigious swing to trap Phil Salt and Laurie Evans leg-before with his first two balls of the Manchester Originals innings.
Here, his first ball was a full toss outside off stump, and Roy sliced the ball towards backward point. He failed to keep his shot down, and Glenn Phillips dived to his left to come up with an excellent low catch.
At the time of writing, the Invincibles were 45-1 in 30 balls. They needed another 94 in 70 balls. At the crease were Jordan Cox (30 in 20 balls) and Will Jacks (13 in 10).
