Watch: Rudi Koertzen initially signals a wide before giving Nick Knight out

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Watch Umpire Rudi Koertzen give Nick Knight out in bizarre circumstances after initially signalling for a wide off the bowling of Shaun Pollock.

Back at the start of the 21st century, England, Zimbabwe and South Africa contested a triangular ODI series that saw the hosts, the Proteas, emerge as victors.

England and South Africa qualified for the final in a tournament that saw Vikram Solanki, Graeme Swann and Chris Read all make their ODI debuts for England. The game was a low-scoring thriller.

Nasser Hussain won the toss and opted for his side to field first at The Wanderers, a decision that paid dividends early on as England reduced the hosts to 21-5 after nine overs with Andy Caddick and Darren Gough doing the damage with the new ball. A battling half-century from Hansie Cronje and a handy contribution from Mark Boucher helped South Africa to a final total of 149 – something to bowl at.

They ended up winning by 38 runs as Pollock ripped through the England line-up, finishing with figures of 5-20 as England were bowled out for a paltry 111. Wides (21) accounted for more runs than any of the England batsman.

One moment, recently shared on social media, stands out from the England innings. In the seventh over of the England chase, Knight flashed hard at a delivery from Pollock that was well wide of off stump. The South Africans went up in unison to appeal for a caught behind only to see umpire Koertzen signal a wide. After a brief delay, Koerzten backtracked on his initial decision to raise his finger to indicate that Knight was indeed out. An unconventional piece of umpiring.
