Watch: Blinded while rolling over, AB de Villiers hits the bull’s eye to run Simon Katich out

de Villiers runs out Katich
by Wisden Staff 1 minute read

The 2006 Australia tour of South Africa is most famous for the epic fifth ODI where South Africa chased down a world record total to make history. However, the same series had another remarkable incident.

In hindsight, it could be argued that this moment revealed to the world the inherent genius of AB de Villiers on a cricket pitch. In the third ODI of the 2006 series at Port Elizabeth, Simon Katich tapped the ball wide of cover for a quick single.

De Villiers rushed in from cover to make up ground rapidly, and then rolled over to not only field the ball, but release it in ultra quick time. Despite being blinded while rolling over, de Villiers managed to hit the stumps at the non-striker’s end and catch Katich short.
