New Zealand fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan came up with a witty response to a question from a fan on Twitter, asking him about his favourite Indian Premier League [IPL] team after Mumbai Indians.

McClenaghan, a three-time IPL champion, has been one of captain Rohit Sharma’s go-to bowlers in the tournament, and has proved his utility with his ability to snare scores of wickets.

However, McClenaghan did not choose any of his opponents as his favourite team, instead making a highly left-field choice that left fans in splits. Responding to a question that asked him, “which is your favourite team in IPL other than MI”, McClenaghan said, “the umpires”.

This is not the first time McClenaghan has cracked up Twitter with his wit. Shortly after returning home from the Pakistan Super League, McClenaghan shared a photo of a hilarious self-isolation note from his wife, who had gone to her parents’ house, to avoid coming in contact with the travelling cricketer.

“When you start to get frustrated, just think,” the note read, “it could be worse… “At least you’re not stuck inside with your wife!!”
