Record-breaking Anderson surpasses McGrath’s wickets tally

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

James Anderson has gone past Glenn McGrath to become the most prolific fast bowler in the history of Test cricket.

Anderson came into day five level with the great Australian on 563 wickets (from 19 more Tests). In bowling Mohammed Shami, the swing bowler went to 564 and outright No.4 spot in the all-time list of Test wicket-takers.

The remarkable feat means only three spinners sit above Anderson in the list: Muttiah Muralitharan with 800, Shane Warne with 708 and Anil Kumble with 619.

Stuart Broad began the day requiring just two wickets to go seventh on the list. He arrived at The Oval with 433 wickets, one behind legendary India all-rounder Kapil Dev.

It is a Test full of records for England, after Alastair Cook’s remarkable final Test century on the fourth day.
