Leach in line for England Test debut

by Wisden Staff 2 minute read

Jack Leach is in line for an England Test debut in the second Test against New Zealand in Christchurch.

Following the announcement that Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali had been left out of the squad for the match, with Leach and James Vince added, it looks likely the Somerset left-arm spinner will get the chance many have been calling for.

He was only added to the squad as a replacement for the injured Mason Crane, who appeared during England’s 4-0 Ashes drubbing in Australia.

And with England seeking to arrest a horrific run of results away from home, Leach finally has a chance to show what he can do.

Given the removal of two such strong lower-order batsmen in Moeen and Woakes, it is possible that Vince will return to the line-up, which would leave Leach vying for his place with his county teammate Craig Overton.

England line-up

Possibly…

Alastair Cook, Mark Stoneman, James Vince, Joe Root, Dawid Malan, Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Jack Leach (Jamie Overton), Mark Wood, Stuart Broad, James Anderson
