Stuart Broad struck in lower back by golf ball

by Wisden Staff 3 minute read

Stuart Broad was struck by a golf ball while at the Brisbane Golf Club, but is “fine”.

There’s no Mitchell Johnson this time around, but with pace bowlers like Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins in the Australian side, England can expect to wear a few this series. For Stuart Broad, the barrage has already started, as he was hit in the lower back by a stray golf ball while lining up a putt.

“Stuart was practising on the putting green when he was hit by a stray golf ball from a member,” according to an England and Wales Cricket Board spokesperson. “He is fine, and no dramas.”

“Rig looking good bud” according to Alex Hales

The fast bowler described the injury, pictured above, as a “graphic image”, although he probably wouldn’t make our list of cricket soldiers. England captain Joe Root was clearly at least able to see the funny side. Broad’s claim that he was able to do “10 press ups pre pic” will also put England fans’ fears at ease.

The incident came on a day of success for Broad at the club, who had earlier posted a selfie with new-ball partner Jimmy Anderson after beating him in a round. Should that be the only blow he takes down under, he will surely consider himself a lucky man.
