Azhar Ali Feared His House Would Be Vandalised After Dropping Virat Kohli In 2017 Champions Trophy Final

Azhar Ali has revealed that he feared his house would be vandalised by angry fans after he dropped Virat Kohli in the 2017 Champions Trophy final.

In an interview on Hasna Mana Hai, Azhar re-lived the famous match which Pakistan won at The Oval nearly six years ago. When the incident happened, Pakistan were in a good position in the match. They had set India 339 to chase and Mohammad Amir had dismissed Rohit Sharma in the first over of the India innings, bringing Kohli to the crease.

Halfway through Amir’s second over, Kohli edged a nipping away delivery straight to Azhar at first slip. It was a simple catch, but Azhar shelled it. In the interview, he elaborated on his feelings at the time.

“I was fearing if he does what he’s known for – he scores a lot in chases – if you drop such a player’s catch, then, after losing an India-Pakistan game, house windows are broken,” said Azhar.

Kohli averages 64.20 when chasing in ODIs and has scored 26 hundreds. In the two matches prior to the final, he had scored 76* and 96* batting second, and had only been dismissed once in the tournament.

“Between [Kohli’s] drop catch and dismissal, plenty of things flashed before my eyes,” said Azhar. “It felt as if I had been burdened with weight and pressure, and that the entire world is watching me asking – ‘look what he’s done.’

“Fortunately, I was thinking about all these scenarios and he got out.”

Azhar’s anguish only lasted for a short time as Kohli was dismissed by Amir’s very next ball. He got a leading edge which fell safely to Shadab Khan at point, leaving India 6-2.

Also in the interview, Azhar revealed a Fakhar Zaman premonition which came true when he was dismissed off what turned out to be a no ball from Jasprit Bumrah early on in his innings.

“He [Fakhar] was laughing, because he shared this later – he had seen a dream a few days ago that he would get out off a no ball, it would be checked again and turn out to be a no ball. And it got repeated in the final. When he came back, I fist-bumped him and said ‘Ramazan is on’.

After the no-ball, Fakhar went on to play a match-winning knock of 114 in just his fourth international innings. Azhar scored a half-century in the famous match, reaching 59 off 70 before he was run 0ut.
