R Ashwin has become the No.1 ranked Test bowler in the ICC rankings, displacing James Anderson, who had risen to the top spot a week ago.

Anderson, 40, had soared to the top position last week, but Ashwin was only two points behind him. Anderson’s wicketless showing in the Wellington Test played a part in his demotion: he finished with figures of 27-7-77-0 in the second innings as England fell short by one run.

Ashwin moved up despite a ten-day break between the second and the third Test matches of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar series, having taken a six-wicket match haul in India’s six-wicket win in Delhi.

Pat Cummins continues to be at third place, while Jasprit Bumrah has moved one place up, despite not playing a Test since July 2022.

Elsewhere, Joe Root moved up from fifth to third in the batting rankings, after hitting his 29th Test century in Wellington. He also moved up two spots to eighth in the all-rounders’ rankings, a list comfortably led by Ravindra Jadeja, who finished with career-best figures of 7-42 in Delhi.

Harry Brook, who has enjoyed a sensational start to Test cricket, is now level with Virat Kohli in rounded-off rating points (665), though at 16th, he is a place above Kohli. Among other notable movements is the entry of Tom Blundell into the top 10, moving four places to No.7 after finishing as the top series run-scorer for New Zealand against England.
